Math: Students will be coming home with the Chapter 3 Test today over Multiplication and Division.  While some of the scores were very good, there were still several students that did not score as well.  As we have stated at the beginning of the year, this new math program is much more challenging than what the students are used to doing.  Instead of just computing problems for a math test, students are now being asked higher level thinking questions in which they have to apply what they have learned.  Many of the problems on the test require several steps before getting the "final" answer.  If a mistake is made in any of the previous steps, the final answer will not be correct.  We spent several days working on the test, discussing the test, and correcting missed questions on the test.  Please take time to look at the test and discuss it with your child.  Take time to practice and review the missed concepts.  We will continue to practice them as well.
A shorter study guide for December vocabulary words was sent home in Friday folders today.  We will have an assessment over the December words (many of which are review words) next Thursday, Dec. 15th.  Students will also be asked to identify the 3-dimensional shapes that we have been studying this month.  Thank you, in advance, for helping your child study!

Weekly Update

Math News
Your child should have his/her first math test over Ch. 1 (Place Value) in the Friday folder today.  We are working on higher core standards in math this year and have incorporated a new math program to help cover these standards.  This math program is more intense and different than what your child has seen before.  While your child's score may not have been what you are used to seeing, he/she is still learning.  It will take some time to learn the format and be able to think more critically.  Please be patient with these changes in our program.  After we went over every aspect of the test this past Monday, the students had time to correct their mistakes and were given a 100 in the gradebook for test corrections.  I will be sending home "extra practice sheets" as homework/extra credit routinely, but your child will not have homework every night.  Many of the concepts in the chapter are taught a different way, a way that is teaching your child to be a more critical thinker.  Some methods are totally different than what you or I learned in school...which would be very hard for you to explain at home.  I don't want to confuse your child; therefore, I will only send homework when it is something I feel they can do independently.
We have been working on estimation strategies this week.   The students also practiced math vocabulary with study buddies.  Please continue to review these words at home.  The test is next Wednesday, Aug. 31.

KCCT testing will begin on April 25th and will last two weeks. We have always asked parents to help with the snacks that we will supply the students everyday when they are finished testing. There are six days that we need snacks.  If you would like to volunteer to provide snacks for your child’s class for testing that would be great! Please let your child’s teacher know and we will give you a specific date.  A few examples of appropriate snacks are drinks, brownies, fruit snacks, fruit, popsicles, ice cream sandwiches, Little Debbie’s or whatever you/your child would like.
