If your child is participating in the Six Flags Read to Succeed program the reading log must be turned in by Wednesday, February 29^th in order to receive the free ticket.  Students only need to have read six hours in order to receive their free ticket.

Reading: Please make sure your child is reading AR. They should be half way to their goal.

Science:  We are studying heat and energy.

Math: We are continuing our chapter on Data and Probability. The February vocabulary study guides were sent home in Friday folders today.  Please practice these words and their meanings with your child.  At this point, we have not discussed all the words that are on the study guide.   Our focus this past week has been on mean, mode, median, and range.  We have also discussed stem and leaf plots. We will be discussing them in class in the next week.  We will have an assessment at the end of the month.

Weekly Update

Mammoth Cave

We have booked the Mammoth Cave trip for May 16^th. Parents are welcome to go with us but are encouraged to have a background check done before going.  Parents can start this by going to the Graves County Board of Education. We ask that parents drive, because there will not be extra room on the bus. The cost for parents will be $12.00. We will cover the cost for students. There will be more information sent home later for parents wanting to go. 

History Fair

The fourth graders will be participating in the history fair this year. They will be working in groups at school on this. Please send a couple dollars with your child that will help with the cost for the board. Thanks for all your helpJ

Subject Areas

Reading: Please be reading with your child every night.  This helps not only with their fluency but improves their comprehension as well.

Science:  We are covering the solar system in science this week.

Math: Many students did much better on the Ch. 4 assessment over Reading and Interpreting Tables and Graphs.  This past week was spent doing a Cumulative Review over concepts we have studied so far.  We have had to do some review of double digit multiplication and long division.  The students also completed a Benchmark Assessment today over material from Ch. 1-4.  Next week, we will begin Ch. 5 on Data and Probability.  Please continue to review the vocabulary list.  We will assess these words next Tuesday, January 31st. Thank you for helping your child study.

     SCIENCE FAIR

Thank you to all the students for all their hard work with the science fair. Congratulations to Holden Cornett, Jackson Emerson, and Ethan Jenkins for placing in the science fair. Everyone did a great!

WINTER MUSICAL

The winter musical is Thursday, December 15^th at 6:00p.m.  Students need to be at school at 5:45. The students are asked to wear winter clothing such as mittens, scarves, coats, and hats.

HOLIDAY PARTY

Our Holiday party will be Tuesday, December 20^th at 1:45p.m. Boys will need to bring boy gifts and girls will bring girl gifts. Please spend $5.00 on the gift.

Reading:  students have until December 20^th to meet their AR goal.   Congratulations to the following students who have already made their goal; Holden, Ethan J, Kirsten, Hannah, Sarah, Sophie, Chaney, Brooklyn, Noah, and Kendall.

Math: Students will be coming home with the Chapter 3 Test today over Multiplication and Division.  While some of the scores were very good, there were still several students that did not score as well.  As we have stated at the beginning of the year, this new math program is much more challenging than what the students are used to doing.  Instead of just computing problems for a math test, students are now being asked higher level thinking questions in which they have to apply what they have learned.  Many of the problems on the test require several steps before getting the "final" answer.  If a mistake is made in any of the previous steps, the final answer will not be correct.  We spent several days working on the test, discussing the test, and correcting missed questions on the test.  Please take time to look at the test and discuss it with your child.  Take time to practice and review the missed concepts.  We will continue to practice them as well.
A shorter study guide for December vocabulary words was sent home in Friday folders today.  We will have an assessment over the December words (many of which are review words) next Thursday, Dec. 15th.  Students will also be asked to identify the 3-dimensional shapes that we have been studying this month.  Thank you, in advance, for helping your child study!

Math News

We are finishing up activities for Ch.2 on Estimation and Number Theory.  We will work on more problem solving and critical thinking skills next week. Please continue to review multiplication facts at home.  We will be assessing the x6 and x7 facts next week.  Our math vocabulary test will be Wednesday, Sept. 28th.  The majority of these words are covered during our calendar time and math instruction, but any extra review you can give over these words would be great!
