Math News:
Students did fairly well on the first vocabulary test for the month of August.  We spent much of our calendar time this past month reviewing the words and their meanings as we talked about those concepts daily.   A new vocabulary list for the month of September will go home next week.  We will incorporate these next vocabulary words during our math instruction time and calendar time just as we did this past month.  We appreciate you taking the time to study and review the words with your child.  Thanks for all you do!

Weekly Update

Math News
Your child should have his/her first math test over Ch. 1 (Place Value) in the Friday folder today.  We are working on higher core standards in math this year and have incorporated a new math program to help cover these standards.  This math program is more intense and different than what your child has seen before.  While your child's score may not have been what you are used to seeing, he/she is still learning.  It will take some time to learn the format and be able to think more critically.  Please be patient with these changes in our program.  After we went over every aspect of the test this past Monday, the students had time to correct their mistakes and were given a 100 in the gradebook for test corrections.  I will be sending home "extra practice sheets" as homework/extra credit routinely, but your child will not have homework every night.  Many of the concepts in the chapter are taught a different way, a way that is teaching your child to be a more critical thinker.  Some methods are totally different than what you or I learned in school...which would be very hard for you to explain at home.  I don't want to confuse your child; therefore, I will only send homework when it is something I feel they can do independently.
We have been working on estimation strategies this week.   The students also practiced math vocabulary with study buddies.  Please continue to review these words at home.  The test is next Wednesday, Aug. 31.

KCCT testing will begin on April 25th and will last two weeks. We have always asked parents to help with the snacks that we will supply the students everyday when they are finished testing. There are six days that we need snacks.  If you would like to volunteer to provide snacks for your child’s class for testing that would be great! Please let your child’s teacher know and we will give you a specific date.  A few examples of appropriate snacks are drinks, brownies, fruit snacks, fruit, popsicles, ice cream sandwiches, Little Debbie’s or whatever you/your child would like.

Science: Please remember to study for your   vocabulary quiz every Friday!
Math: Please continue to check math homework nightly.  Many students' scores have dropped some due to careless mistakes.
The students have also been shown some websites that they can go to for extra practice on math concepts.  If your child chooses to get on a website for at least 20 minutes, let me know the "Name of the Website Game" and how long he/she played, and I can reward some bonus points.  Thank you for helping your child improve and succeed.

Mammoth Cave
We have booked the Mammoth Cave trip for May 16th. Parents are welcome to go with us. We just ask that parents drive because they will be no extra room on the bus. The cost for parents will be $12.00. We will cover the cost for students. There will be more information sent home later for parents wanting to go.
